Many plumbing tasks can seem daunting at first, but they need not seem so. Plumbing, like all things mechanical, works on the concepts of common sense. But as I always say, if common sense was so common, I wouldn't have a job.
The first thing to know about plumbing is that there are two systems in your house: the water service and the drain, waste and vent. Each system has characteristics of its own and each really requires different skills. There are a few common skills that will help anyone.
Common skills for the plumbing beginner is to learn about the systems, project planning and knowing about yourself. To learn about the systems, there are a plethora of websites that have a lot of information about plumbing out there. Some are good and others are not so good.
Project planning is very important. The first thing to do is to identify what materials you actually need. This is important, because it is aggravating running back and forth to the home improvement store, especially at remote locations. In addition, time is important. A beginner should plan in more time for unfamiliar tasks.
It is important to know yourself. If you are not comfortable with a task, call a plumber. There is a reason that plumbers have to be licensed. It is all about protecting the public health. But, a majority of tasks are not complicated or difficult.
As mentioned above, there are two basic systems for the plumbing in any structure: water service and the drain, waste and vent. Each system requires different skills and tasks; they also require a different way of thinking.
The water service is mainly pressurized pipe. The plumber must know about the required pressures, in order to make sure the correct pipe and joints are used for the application. Plumbing repairs are most likely the best projects for beginning plumbers. New construction requires adherence to the plumbing code, which if not done correctly will have to be torn out. That is an expense that most homeowners can not afford. Plumbing that is not inspected, will put the house in non-compliance, which may effect the selling price.
The drain, waste, and vent is not a pressurized system, but the pipe must also be water tight. Understanding this system is probably the defining thing about being a plumber. Most of the plumbing code is dedicated to drain, waste and vent as well as cross-connection prevention. Again, repairs are probably a better fit for beginners.
Plumbing can be complicated, a beginner should arm him/herself with knowledge of systems and self, and plan the project effectively in order to be successful. A beginner should build on the successes and use that experience to be better.
